Light trucks or pickup trucks were first introduced in Thailand by the US Army, which was stationed at various airports in the Kingdom.
The vehicles were purely American brands such as Chevrolet, Ford, GMC, Dodge, etc.
It was only in 1970 that Datsun introduced a small pickup truck with a 1,200cc 4-cylinder gasoline engine, which looked like pickup trucks sold today. Nissan later introduced a larger body but still used a small gasoline engine, and it quickly became the most popular pickup truck in the Thai market. The pickup remained in production for many years, while there were also competitors such as Toyota Hilux, Mazda Proceed and Daihatsu, which was very strong in the Chiang Mai public transport market…

The Brazilian Supplier Report

In 2011, Brazil was the world’s seventh largest auto producer, turning out 3.41 million vehicles and also the fifth largest auto market, with sales of 3.63 million representing increases of 7% and 3.4% respectively on the previous year. But of greater significance is the fact that the market in Brazil had continued to grow strongly throughout the global economic downturn of the previous two years. In 2009, despite a 43% drop in exports, local vehicle production slipped only 1% as domestic sales bucked the global gloom, growing by 11.5%. 

The continued resilience of Brazil’s auto market and the increasing affluence of Brazilian consumers has certainly attracted renewed global attention and has stimulated a flurry of substantial new investments from international vehicle manufacturers and suppliers. Whilst the initial success of these new projects may rest on the continuing growth of the domestic market, their longer-term sustainability will require Brazil to place greater emphasis on building international sales and trading partnerships than has previously been the case. The increased levels of vehicle assembly will also place new pressure on the local supply base and the availability of indigenous engineering skills.

Proton Delisted From Malaysia's Stock Exchange

Proton has been delisted from Bursa Malaysia, almost eight years since joining the local stock exchange, after new owners DRB-Hicom succeeded in securing 98.6 percent (as at April 26) of Proton shares, above the threshold of 90 percent required to privatise Proton.

Starting with the buying of a 42.74 percent stake in Proton from Khazanah Nasional Bhd at RM 5.50 a share early this year, DRB-Hicom then launched a mandatory general offer for the remaining shares it did not own, valuing Proton at RM 3.02 billion. With 98.6 percent now in hand, DRB-Hicom can compulsorily acquire the 1.4 percent still with investors.

Without the public eye of scrutiny, DRB-Hicom will have the flexibility to embark on long-term plans to make Proton a more profitable company, and not worry about short-term results that the stock market players are more concerned about. Approvals from shareholders on any future corporate exercises will no longer be needed once Proton becomes private.

And indeed change is in the air: DRB-Hicom Bhd managing director Datuk Seri Mohd Khamil Jamil was asked in March to assume the leading position as Proton's executive chairman and executive director, taking over from Proton's then chairman and director Datuk Seri Mohd Nadzmi Mohd Salleh.

Honda restarts Thai vehicle deliveries

Honda has commenced delivery of vehicles to customers across the country, with its Ayutthaya plant having resumed operations in late March.

However, Honda dealers are facing further pressure as the Japanese auto-maker has chopped the credit period for dealers from 1 month to just 10 days.

Honda's two assembly plants in Ayutthaya were totally submerged during last year's massive flood, resulting in more than 60,000 customers orders going unanswered.

Ford opens new plant, vows major local sourcing of parts

Ford plans to purchase up to US$800 million worth of parts annually from Thailand to supply its new $450-million passenger vehicle plant in Rayong.

The purchases do not include sourcing by Ford for AutoAlliance Thailand, its joint venture with Mazda.

The $800 million in purchases will go to achieving 40% local Asean content, a requirement for automakers wanting to export the vehicles duty-free within the region.

Ford opens new plant in Rayong

Ford opened a second plant in Thailand on Thursday giving the firm the ability to produce 445,000 vehicles a year in the country. Ford Thailand Manufacturing opened a $450 million U.S. manufacturing plant in the Eastern Seaboard Industrial Estate, which is roughly 99 miles southeast of Bangkok.

Labour shortage threatens Thai Automotive Growth

With labor day approaching quickly – here are 2 statistics on the Thailand Automotive Labour Situation. Unemployment is nearly non-existent in Thailand (index mundi / World Bank estimate is 1% since 2005).

With the planned growth from 2M to 3M vehicles Thailand faces a serious shortage of workers, the effect of which is worsened by a high volatility. In the current market there are hundreds and thousands of new jobs available and many of the best trained employees decide to change their employer 'for a few dollars more'.

The Automotive Industry in Thailand is challenged to develop more workers, implement additional training programs and deploy automation systems in order to meet production & quality goals over the next years.

Nano launch delayed until after first-time car scheme

Tata Motors will delay selling the Nano in Thailand until after the first-time car buyer programme expires, said an industry source.

The introduction of the Nano _ by some estimates the world's cheapest car _ was previously set for early this year but was postponed in light of the influx of eco-cars being offered by Japanese carmakers in Thailand.

The first-time car buyer programme, which rebates taxes paid by first-time buyers purchasing certain types of automobiles, further weakened the competitive position of the Nano.

Ford and Mazda invest $27m in pickup plant expansion

Strong local demand for Ford Ranger and Mazda BT-50 pickup trucks has prompted Ford and Mazda to expand their AutoAlliance Thailand (AAT) joint-venture plant in Rayong.

The companies have jointly invested another US$27 million (837 million baht) in the plant to increase pickup capacity by another 20,000 units a year. The sum is in addition to the $350 million they spent last year to expand the plant to accommodate new pickup production.

Thailand to export autos to Japan

The new Mirage, Mitsubishi's global compact car built in Thailand, will be shipped to Japan in July this year.

Export volume, however, has not yet confirmed.

Mitsubishi Motors Corp (MMC) also aims to export the Mirage to Asean, Europe and other markets successively.

The Mirage will be inspected by Japanese experts from MMC before shipments begin to Japan and other markets to ensure quality is on par with that of models built in Japan.

Honda Production Targets 2012

BANGKOK, April 1 – Honda Automobile (Thailand) Co., Ltd targets manufacturing 240,000 units this year after its plant in Ayutthaya resumed output on Saturday.

Hiroshi Kobayashi, president & CEO of Asian Honda Motor said that in the past three months, Honda mobilised its workers to revive the factory in the Rojana Industrial Park in Ayutthaya, which was hit by last year’s devastating flood.

The plant resumed operations officially on March 31, planning to manufacture 240,000 units in the remaining nine months of this year with 150,000 units to be sold domestically and the rest for exports.

Thai-made Mitsubishi Mirage to be sold globally

Mitsubishi Motors Corp (MMC) president Osamu Masuko said on Tuesday that the firm would soon start manufacturing the Mitsubishi Mirage at a factory in Thailand to meet both local and global demand.

Calling the Mirage a 'global compact car', Mr Masuko said during a Bangkok press conference the Mirage would fit the needs of both mature and emerging markets.

Will Thailand enter the TOP 10 in 2012?

Sounds ambitious…but if you lonk at the 2011 statistics, you will see that the 2012 projected production number of 2,100,000 vehicles will bring us about almost right there – or at least very very close. My personal opinion: We will make it by 2013.

February vehicle production improves

Total vehicle output increased by 11.6% year-on-year last month to 168,221 units after all carmakers except Honda recovered from the floods of 2011.

Malaysia: Volkswagen, DRB-HICOM officially start vehicle output

Volkswagen Group Malaysia and local partner DRB-HICOM have officially started assembly of the Passat from SKD kits in Pekan.

The partners also laid the foundation stone for a new production hall at the plant site. In a second stage, the Jetta and Polo will be produced - from CKD kits.

Bangkok Post: The big leap

Interesting feature about Continental Thailand and portrait of Dirk Janovsky, MD:

"Our biggest automobile client is the AutoAlliance Thailand plant. Continental components are used in the Ford Ranger, Mazda BT-50, Nissan March and Ford Fiesta,"said Janovsky, who holds a PhD in Mechanical Engineering from the  Institute of Production Technology and Machine Tools, the University of Darmstadt.

Janovsky will be overseeing an additional 600 million baht investment at the plant which he described as "a higher depth of manufacturing and a machining line for the production of injector bodies", which will be channelled to export markets such as India, Europe and  Argentina.

Continental Automotive's current localisation of sourced components is 40%, a rate which is targeted to increase to about 60% by 2016.

Bangkok Post: Thai Summit capacity gets B9bn turbo boost

Thai Summit Group, one of the country's largest auto parts makers, will spend 9 billion baht to expand capacity at home and abroad this year in a bid to cash in on steady growth in vehicle production in Southeast Asia and China.

With a presence in China, Japan, the US and India, as well as Thailand, Thai Summit expects revenue of 60 billion baht this year, up by 20% from last year.

Auto industry staging major rebound

The local automobile industry is expected to experience a boom this year, said Piangjai Kaewsuwan, president of the Thai Automotive Industry Association.

Record output at or above 2.1 million units in 2012 is anticipated.

In the domestic market, sales of 1.1 million vehicles are expected, while exports of Thai-built vehicles are seen hitting 1 million units.

Review : Jaguar XF 2012

The new XF has a change in the "vision", which is characterized by bi-xenon headlamps, LED daytime running lights and a new type of triangular air vents in the front wheel arches and bonnet. LED technology is also used in the taillamps, which extend to the trunk and decorated with a large chrome. Even the wheel designs (17 to 20 inches) has been changed, while the exterior gains three new colors.

The most important change concerns the front passenger seat and rear for increased support and a new layer. 7-inch touch screen center is now equipped with fast activation key. Provision of audio system has been maximized with 1200W and 17 speaker system from Bowers & Wilkins. Satellite navigation, multimedia hard drive with MP3 compatibility, two USB and Bluetooth complete the new media view Jaguar XF also comes with a voice "Interactive Voice" command. 2012 Model Year Jaguar XF will be available with a base price of € 46,450.

2012 Jaguar XF also uses new diesel engine, this new diesel engine called the AJ-i4d and a 2.2-liter turbodiesel, which aims to reduce fuel consumption, vibration, noise and keep the V6 performance. With 190 hp Jaguar XF 2.2D capable of reaching 100 km / h from a standstill in just 8 seconds to touch 225 km / h, with a combined consumption of 4.5 l/100 km (over 800 km of autonomy) and emits 149 g / km CO2. 8-speed automatic transmission is available in a variety of diesel XF, weighs the same as the previous unit and has a 6-speed shift speed of 200 milliseconds. Listed on the XF 3.0D reduce fuel consumption at a height of 5.2 l/100 km and carbon dioxide emissions to 169 g / km.

Review : Nissan GT-R 2012

The latest version of the supercar-wheel-drive Nissan GT-R goes on sale in Europe since January 2012. On the 2012 version of the interior has undergone minor changes. It changed the backlight of the instrument panel and center console, while as regards comfort, is now standard with the rear parking camera and were renewed Bose woofer installation. The price for the time being, remains unknown, but no further changes to the equipment is likely lurks around 100,000 €. In this way, the GT-R will continue to be the coupe for more than 500 hp more affordable on the market.

This new engine management system has produced other direct benefits, including improved torque from 612 to 632 Nm, which will be delivered in continuous mode between 3,200 and 5,800 rpm.

Review : BMW M5 (2012)

The new M5 V10 says goodbye to the air and start to mount the same engine as the X5 and X6 M, a 4.4 eight-cylinder that produces 560 hp V-(and 680 Nm) and that for the first time in the history of this model will use two turbo-compressors (in this case double entry) to beat the performance of all its rivals. Among the elements that make possible such services include the exceptional power / weight ratio achieved with the increased presence of aluminum (3.3 pounds per horsepower), the Quick Start Launch Control system that offers the dual-clutch gearbox and a set Drivelogic saving Efficient Dynamics measures (such as start / stop and brake energy recovery) which adds a mode of transmission that favors the use of less fuel consumption.

And no doubt there has been successful. At least now, neither the E63 AMG Mercedes-Benz or a Porsche Panamera Turbo is able to offer more power, better acceleration and improved fuel consumption figure. BMW has literally surpassed all schemes achieving an acceleration from 0 to 100 km / h in 4.4 seconds and from 0 to 200 km / h in 13.0 seconds, with an approved mixed use which has been reduced drastically from 14, 8 liters of the previous generation to less than 10 liters (9.9 exactly).
